To see the American president bow his head in mourning (吊唁) to the victims plays exceedingly well to a prestige conscious culture that has felt slighted lately. So far, nearly 1800 comments have been posted to this story (in Chinese).

The comments are very interesting – I’d say 90% of them are positive toward President Bush, his wife, and Americans! This is unlike what one usually finds in the Chinese blogosphere. It also helps that the US has vastly raised its initial donation of US$500,000, which has been roundly ridiculed in China, as Truth from Facts reported on earlier. But the image of America mourning for dead Chinese people means a lot to the Chinese. A lot of the nationalism in this country (China) has to do with feeling that outsiders look down upon them. What encourages me the most by the hundreds of comments of thanks by Chinese netizens is that it shows that the regular animosity and dispise many Chinese have against America and other foreign countries may only be skin deep. There is room for a strong US-China relationship if only these two countries can learn how to stop antagonizing one another.

#2 (Guangdong Province) – America is trash. F*ck all American women.
#3 – They’re helping us Chinese? Americans are real crooks. Everyone let’s take action, put forth your effort to help the injured people in the Sichuan earthquake!
#7 – Everyone unite! Whether America donates or not is their business, but we must help.
#9 – America, f*ck your ancestors, a people born as dogs and raised as wolves, a dogsh!t people.
#10 – commenter posted news that McDonald’s is donating 1,000,000 RMB, and that the Ronald McDonald House Fund of China was additionally donating 500,000 RMB. The poster then divided this figure by the 500 McDonald’s chains in China to say that each puts ups RMB 3,0oo.

SH Tig comments – Given how bad the comments are going so far, I’ll hope he wasn’t trying to say that RMB 3,000 per store was not much. But that was his gist. I won’t mention that there are actually many more McDonald’s in China, nearly a thousand, meaning each store is represented by only RMB 1,500. Still not seeing why McDonald’s would be a bad guy with this. They will sell you an apple pie and bottomless coffee for RMB 9 in Shanghai. Seems like they’ve been helping China out all along. Anyway, back to the comments:

#12 – Americans are not good things. They only talk about human rights, not human life.
#14 – It’s an embarrassment that this rich, powerful country only donated $50,000. China always donates millions to them. Next time China will donate RMB 500,000, no more!
#15 – Americans are not good things, only donating $500,000. Damn them to hell.
#16 and 17 (same poster) - Generosity comes from each person’s heart. The essence of a one million dollar donation and a one dollar donation is the same, you can’t require people to donate a certain amount, donating shows the goodness of people, it’s not right to curse them…..everyone feels that America has a lot of money but only donated $500,000, and that to a rich superpower this is a small amount. But no matter what the amount you can’t curse it, afterall maybe that donation was in the first batch, how will all these people cursing explain it if later on more money is given?
#18 – America’s $500,000 clearly demonstrates that America looks down on China. It’s to attack and humiliate China.
#19 – After Myanmar asked for aid, the United Nations and governments of several countries issued an appeal for help…America offered $250,000 to help but was rejected by Myanmar’s government.
#21 – America is the most generous country, but only gave $500,000 to the Sichuan earthquake area, much much less than Hong Kong / Macau / Taiwan / Russia / Japan / Korea, Saudi Arabia.

SHTig comments: Saudi gave US$60 million. That is by comparison a huge amount. Would like to know what’s up there…
#22 – Americans are little people
#24 – American really is damned to no end, like a child just finishing drinking milk
#25 – Don’t beg for the world’s support, rely on ourselves!
#26 – All of America’s money is used for fighting
#35 - America is so disgusting, the American enterprises in China are especially stingy…KFC, Coca-Cola, Microsoft are all iron roosters (stingy).
#36 – Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is donating $25,000,000, what do you have to say to that?

SHTig comments: subsequent posts had no response to #36′s point. In fact, they continued on in the same vein more or less as #1-35, sadly…

Chinese are coming together to extend moral support, cash and blood to help the victims in the Sichuan disaster. It’s a heartening thing to witness. So much blood was collected on Wednesday 5.14 in Beijing and Shanghai, that the blood collectors had to turn people away.

Sina.com is keeping a list of companies that have donated RMB 1,000,000 or more. It’s good to see lots of major Chinese corporates kicking in some cash. Several foreign companies with a presence in China are big donors too (Mary Kay, Intel, GE, Carrefour, IDG (venture capitalists putting their money to great use!)).

The French retailer and target of Chinese nationalist fury over the Olympic Flame controversy, Carrefour, has donated RMB 2 million (US$290,000) in earthquake relief. Chinese ‘netizen’ response is mixed. One site has mixed postings of thanks and others pointing out it’s a pittance considering Carrefour “broke the hearts of all Chinese people”, with one posting a picture of a french baby giving the bird, cynicism was expressed here from a user named “son of a bitch little Japan (狗日小日本) that Carrefour wouldn’t have made the donation if not for the boycott of its stores in China earlier this month. But lots of commenters kept it positive with thanks, and one here saying this proves Carrefour is a friend not an enemy of China.

It’s now 5:30pm in China. The 7.8 earthquake with an epicenter in Wenchuan, Sichuan province that struck at 2:28pm is being reported on local TV and the internet. While State media is reporting that Premier Wen Jiabao is headed to the area and that emergency aid is being sent, and that Hu Jintao has said the injured must be helped immediately. However there have been no reports of injuries or deaths. Television reporters on CCTV9, the Chinese language news channel, have not even mentioned the possibility of casualties. They are currently doing interviews with reporters around the country, but have not been able to reach any reporters near the area of Wenchuan.

My friend in Shanghai from Shaanxi Province (which borders Sichuan) called a friend in Shaanxi. The friend said that students in Shaanxi have been hospitalized due to falling debris in their school. My friend in Shanghai from Sichuan has been calling Sichuan but the lines are dead. Meanwhile, the only images being broadcast are from nearby Chengdu show people mostly confused, but not harmed, and a broken water pipe. I hope that is because that’s all there is, but I have a bad feeling there are serious casualties and the media just isn’t reporting it yet.

All is fine in Shanghai. They say the earthquake was felt in the Jing’an district of Shanghai, where I am, but I didn’t feel it. A colleague down the hall did however, and left the building as a precaution 10 minutes before the building was officially evacuated.
